Gordon J Pownall MSc
Gordon has been 'on the water' since the age of 13, starting off sailing dinghies on inland waters. Moving towards bigger and larger craft and the owner of a Flying Fifteen Racing keelboat, Gordon now spends most weekends on the water and can be found either delivering racing, instructing, training or on charters or deliveries.
Gordon is a Commercially Endorsed RYA/ MCA Yachtmaster (both Sail and Power) and a freelance RYA Yachtmaster Instructor (Sail), teaching up to and including Offshore Yachtmaster courses only at recognised RYA Training Centres.
Gordon works on a freelance basis for Solent Sail, Sunsail and other prestigious RYA approved training centres and organisations as a corporate Skipper, Yachtmaster Instructor delivering the RYA Sail Cruising Scheme and a Flotilla Course / Sailing Refresher Instructor. Since 2011, Gordon has been Sunsail's lead demonstration Skipper in the UK, displaying the the brand new Sunsail 444 Catamaran to prospective buyers and charter clients for Sunsail.
Gordon also holds the RYA Powerboat Instructor Qualification and holds the RYA Advanced Powerboat Certificate with Commercial Endorsement and on rare occasions can also be found racing Honda Formula Four Stroke Powerboats operated by Saber Marine as one of their Commercial Powerboat Race Drivers.
He also holds an International Certificate in Competence (ICC), RYA Certificates in Sea Survival as well as ISAF Sea Survival Certificate, VHF/DSC Radio Operation, RYA Asymmetric Sailing and First Aid certificates, all of which are valid and kept in date.
Gordon's first principle is always safety on the water.
Gordon has extensive knowledge of the Solent and cross channel runs where he teaches as well as races as Foredecker or Mainsail Trimmer on a Fastnet class-winning Oyster SJ 35, (see the Our Colleagues page), and has Skippered countless charters with corporate clients, fun sailing experience weekender crews, corporate race days and of course, with friends. In 2009 and 2011 Gordon co-Skippered the Rolex Fastnet Race and is racing again as Skipper in 2013.
His knowledge and experience also covers the Caribbean as well as the Med as far East as the Aegean Sea where Gordon lived and taught (as well as sailed) in Greece 'on and off' for four years and where he returns each year to undertake yacht deliveries for Vernicos Yacht Charters, Nomicos and a number of private clients.
With both day, night and long passage making experience inshore and offshore, anyone sailing with Gordon on a charter or under his instruction on the RYA Sail Cruising or RYA Powerboat Scheme are assured a fun educational time and will also benefit from his excellent cooking skills when on board with him...!
Gordon was awarded Corporate Skipper of the Year in 2011/12 by Sunsail.
